If you’ve ever enjoyed an out of season holiday in Cornwall, you’ll know the weather can change in an instant! But this doesn’t mean the fun has to stop!
There are plenty of rainy day friendly activities across Cornwall to make your holiday the trip to remember- and we’ve made the planning easier for you by making an itinerary for a whole week packed full of family-friendly rainy day activities!
Starting off the week in Newquay, let’s enter an exciting underwater adventure full of local and exotic species at Blue Reef Aquarium. Check out their daily feeding times here to plan your visit! Newquay is a bustling town full of shops, cafes, and restaurants- why not wander through the streets and duck in the shelter of a cozy café for lunch!
Another day along the beautiful North Coast of Cornwall, this time we’re taking a mystical trip to Boscastle’s Museum of Witchcraft and Magic! Since it first began in 1960, the museum now holds a collection that has grown to over 3000 objects and over 7000 books! Travel a mile out from Boscastle village to Boscastle Farm shop for some local produce, coastal views, and an all-important Cornish cream tea!
Heading inland to the town of Bodmin, we’re taking a trip back to 1779 to learn all about the gripping tales of Georgian and Victorian crime and punishment! Take a self-guided tour through the cells, corridors and execution pit or book a guided tour and see the courthouse and gallows- feeling brave? Why not book a ghost tour! Re-fuel after an exciting day at The Jamaica Inn, an 18th century smuggling Inn now famously used as a pub!
In the nearby town of Liskeard, we’re diving deep into the caves and caverns at Carnglaze! This former slate mine is now a popular tourist attraction comprising three large man-made caves. Grab your route plan and helmet and roam the caverns to find mineral collections and a breathtaking underground lake on the lowest level! Return for a breath of fresh air and take a walk around the 8-acres of ancient woodland surrounding the caverns.
Making our way to the other side of the coast near Par and St Austell today to visit the world famous Eden Project! This incredible site is made up of huge greenhouse domes housing thousands of plant species with each enclosure replicating different natural biomes! Rest, play, and eat all while learning how to care for the planet that cares for you! A trip to the Eden Project will take most of the day, however if you find yourself looking for a quick trip after, head to the nearby harbour in Charlestown- a quintessential fishing harbour used as a filming location in Poldark, Dr Who, and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland!
We now travel further south to the West Coast of Cornwall to the popular town of St Ives where we find the Tate Gallery brought to Cornwall by the same group responsible for the Tate Modern Gallery in London. The Tate St Ives exhibits an ever changing selection of work by modern British artists with links to the St Ives area. Check out our previous blog post here for some ideas on how to spend the rest of your day in this beautiful town!
What better place to finish your fun packed week in Cornwall than in the seaside town of Falmouth! Our final trip takes us to The National Maritime Museum, a harbourside museum housing 15 galleries over 5 floors, exploring the important influence of the sea on history and culture. Check out their website for up to date information on current exhibitions! While in the area, continue the coastal theme and explore the countless seafood bars and restaurants Falmouth has to offer!
