Portreath was once a busy port, exporting copper from the nearby village of Carharrack and importing coal from South Wales. It is a quiet village, with a small inactive harbour and great family friendly beach. It’s a fantastic holiday destination, with a short walk to the beach and numerous places to eat and drink within the village. Its location also makes it a great place to holiday, with it being close to many popular tourist attractions and other nearby beaches.
Portreath beach was Good Beach Guide Recommended 2015. It is a sandy beach with shingle towards the shore. It also has excellent water quality, so is great for those looking to take a dip in the sea whilst on holiday! Depending on the conditions, Portreath can be the perfect destination to surf, or if the sea is a little calmer, perhaps see if you can kayak to Gul rock? You’ll be sure to see how the rock got its name! At low tide, explore the rock pools to the right of the beach. Which creatures will you be lucky enough to find? Portreath also has a smaller beach to the right of the main beach, past the harbour wall, which is great for those with smaller children.

Porthtowan beach is a fantastic award-winning beach, just an 8-minute drive from the village of Portreath. It has a nearby carpark for easy access to the beach, toilets, shops and a bar next to the beach. It’s a brilliant beach for exploring when the tide is out, with its’ golden sand stretching to nearly 1.5 miles! Great news for sea lovers too, Porthtowan beach was listed as 1 of only 8 Blue Flag beaches in Cornwall in 2019. It was also awarded the Seaside Award, Category A- Resort Bathing Beach. If you’re looking for a beach with fantastic facilities and clean water, Porthtowan is a go to if you’re holidaying in Portreath!

Just over a 15-minute drive from Portreath, down the scenic costal road along the North Cliffs, is Godrevy beach. See if you can spot the beautiful Godrevy Lighouse on the drive down! It is a National Trust beach, with a National Trust run car park – so great news for National Trust members, this car park is free! At low tide, this beach is great for exploring the exposed rock pools and also for walking to the neighbouring beach, Gwithian Towans. The river separating the two beaches, known as the Red River, once ran red from the mineral deposits from tin mining. Godrevy and Gwithian Towans are now two of Cornwall’s cleanest beaches with fantastic water quality. Godrevy can be a great location for seal spotting, with Seal Cove just around the corner from the beach. You can see the seals in their natural habitat by taking a short walk up past the top field car park, which overlooks Seal Cove. It’s a fantastic place to visit if you’re staying in nearby Portreath.
