Half of Cornwall's "best beaches" lists read like an assault course. Fifteen-minute cliff scrambles. Steps cut into rock. Tides that cut you off if you're not paying attention. Gorgeous if you're a fit adult with a rucksack but considerably less fun if you're also carrying a cool bag, a beach tent, two buckets and a toddler who's decided this is the exact moment to stop walking...
So this isn't a "secret coves" list, it's the opposite (although if that is what you're looking for check these out!). These are the beaches you can actually get to without a Duke of Edinburgh expedition: proper car parks, flat or gently sloping access, and sand that's ready to go the second you're out of the car. We've spread them across North, South and West Cornwall, so wherever you're staying, there's one close by!
Before the list, a quick note on what we checked for each beach:
None of these are a secret. That's rather the point, they're popular because they work, especially with young families.
Polzeath A wide, flat sweep of golden sand with a large car park right behind the dunes. The beach shelves gently, which makes it a good one for younger paddlers, and there's a proper village behind it (think shops, cafés, and surf hire) so you're never far from an ice cream or a forgotten bucket and spade. Gets busy in summer, but the space absorbs the crowds well.
Daymer Bay Just around the headland from Polzeath and quieter for it. Sheltered, sandy, and the tide comes in slowly rather than catching people out, which families with small children tend to appreciate. There's a beachside car park and a short, flat walk to the sand.
Perranporth One of the longest beaches in Cornwall, with a huge car park and level access straight onto three miles of sand. Wide enough that even a packed August day doesn't feel crowded once you walk a little way along. Lifeguarded in season, with a beach café for when the packed lunch runs out.
Watergate Bay Two miles of flat sand with direct access from a clifftop car park, don't worry there's no scrambling involved, just a short slope down. Popular with surf schools and families alike and with plenty of space for both to coexist without getting in each other's way.
Gyllyngvase Beach (Gylly), Falmouth Arguably the easiest "proper" beach day in Cornwall. Just a short walk from Falmouth town, with parking nearby, a café right on the sand, and calm, sheltered water thanks to its position in the Fal estuary. Ideal if you want a beach day without a long drive first.
Looe Beach Right in the middle of town, with flat access and everything you need (shops, cafés, toilets) within a couple of minutes' walk. Sheltered and calm, which makes it forgiving for younger children still finding their sea legs.
Par Sands A large, flat, sandy beach with a car park right alongside it, genuinely no walk required. Popular with local families for exactly that reason: you can be unpacking the picnic within thirty seconds of getting out of the car.
Carbis Bay A sheltered, south-facing cove near St Ives with soft golden sand and calm water thanks to the bay's natural protection. Access from the car park is level, and there's a beach café on site. Consistently rated one of the best swimming beaches in the country- and it's easy to see why.
Praa Sands A long, flat stretch of sand near Penzance with parking right behind the beach and no walk to speak of. Gently shelving water makes it a solid paddling spot, and there's a café and shop within a couple of minutes.
