Great Flat Lode Trail
The Great Flat Lode Trail is a 7.5 mile (12km) circular trail in the heart of the
historic Camborne-Redruth mining district.
The trail is multi-use for walking, cycling and horse riding.
Centred on the impressive hill of Carn Brea this trail is named after the ore vein which was
the centre of the tin mining activity here.
Information boards at the mining sites close to the trail provide further information on the
history and working of the mines which were famous for their tin and copper production.
For those wishing to make a small detour from the trail, the top of Carn Brea offers fine
views of Cornwall's Atlantic coast and it is possible to explore the slopes where the
remains of Neolithic and Iron Age occupation have been found. The Carn Brea Castle
restaurant and the Basset monument are other points of interest.
Most of the trail is off-road. The trail can be used by walkers, cyclists and by horse riders.
If cycling, it is advisable to use a mountain bike.

One of the oldest towns in Cornwall, Redruth has a jam packed heritage in mining that reaches right back to the bronze age. From you holiday house in Redruth you’ll be on the doorstep of history. In the 19th century, Redruth was the centre of Cornwall’s once-rich tin mining industry and was the richest and largest metal mining area of the UK and was an integral part of the industrial revolution. A hotbed of industrial invention and home even to gas lighting, this incredible town was pivotal in the spread of Cornish goods and culture all over the modern world.
Whilst no longer an industrial mining town, much of this rich history remains on show in the clean, sunny streets which are lined with the grand buildings of a commercial past, with highlights including the Butter Market, Victorian theatre, the Coffee Tavern and the old mining exchange which once held boisterous auctions for locally mined copper and tin. Many of these old building have now been repurposed and although carefully preserved, now play host to holiday makers venturing out from their Redruth holiday houses to enjoy fine foods, Cornish cream tea and coffee. Antique and vintage clothing shops also abound in many of Redruth’s historic buildings and there’s plenty of curiosities and history to keep even the least keen shoppers occupied.
Old mining tracks running from Redruth, close to many of the holiday houses for rent in Redruth, now offer beautiful, near-level cycle and walking trails which are perfect for exploring the stunning Cornish countryside around Redruth. There’s also plenty of opportunity to stop off along the way for a pasty, a cream tea, or even a traditional Cornish cyder.
Close to town are plenty attractions for visitors on a rental house holiday in Redruth, including the watersports and angling centre at Stithians Lake and Country Park which is a great spot to get out sailing and windsurfing without the risks of the open ocean. One of the county’s top free visitor attractions, Heartlands, is also close by, offering 19 acres of fun packed family adventure including gardens, exhibitions, climb-on sculptures, craft studios and a giant adventure playground. You can learn even more about Cornish mining heritage at the National Trust’s Cornish Mines and Engines discovery centre at East Pool mine, or go further back in time at the 5,000 year old Neolithic hill fort remains and 18th century castle, near Barn Crea. You can even go shopping crazy and Cornwall Gold at Treasure Park, which houses the largest jewelry collection in Cornwall.

Amazing place. It is just like the pictures. The owners are really nice. Great location for exploring.
On arrival - the owners were very helpful and answered all the questions we needed to know. The actual house is excellent with no complaints what so ever and the welcoming treats were a very nice touch. Swimming Pool and Hot Tub were amazing. The only comment I would make is that the bedrooms are very snug - more like a cabin - but - still very nicely furnished.
We all had a good time and the owner has already implemented some of my minor suggestions - keep up the good work.
Great house and location, everything we wanted. Can highly recommend, we hope to return.
The accommodation is amazing. Very well equipped and has enough entertainment for a shiny and rainy day. We had a fantastic time and highly recommend it!
Amazing stay here. Pool and hot tub a delight after a long day walking the coast. Being dog friendly was fab too and the owners even gave us a basket of treats when we arrived including ones for the hounds. Defiantly stay again and recommended.
If anything, the listing doesn’t do this house and the lovely little touches to it justice! Comfy beds, homely living area, well equipped kitchen, clean and fresh bathrooms and, of course, the pool and hot tub were amazing. For an Autumn visit the house was cozy and definitely on the warm side. My ever so fussy other half had absolutely nothing to grumble about at this house!!! The owners are just next door and certainly make you feel welcome. We plan to go back!!!!!
We had a fabulous time staying at Trevithick including the dogs. The property is dog friendly with large gardens that are secure. The location is excellent plenty of local walks and only around half an hour drive to st ives and Newquay and 40 minutes from other locations such as lizard point and lands end...the swimming pool and pool table was a big hit with our teenage boys..Robbie and Karen are around if you need them however leave you to enjoy your time at Trevithick
We would love to return one day if you are thinking of booking this property you will not be disappointed
Thanks for lovely review hopefully see you again in future Karen and Robbie
Fabulous house! The pool area is amazing, kept everyone entertained for hours, we didn't want to leave. We'll definitely recommend it to others.
Thanks for your review so glad you had a great holiday
Absolutely stunning place!! We all had a blast the pool was a big hit with the kids. Karen & Robbie are so friendly. We had a brilliant stay. Thankyou.
Very clean house with everything you need. The swimming pool is amazing!
Thank you very much, we look forward to seeing you again.
We loved the house and the swimming pool was great to have and made our holiday a fantastic week. Also Karen was really nice and made us feel very welcome . A definite place to stay .wonderfull
Glad you enjoyed your stay thanks for lovely review
We loved our holiday here. We went as a whole family, me, my husband, son, daughter, son-in-law 2 granddaughters aged 2 and 4 and our dog.Everything we needed was there also a welcome box which even included dog chews. We had 1 day of rain but it just meant we could all play in the pool for the day. The nearby town is quite run down but it did not spoil our visit to Cornwall at all as we could travel everywhere as it is very central. We would certainly go again. Only 1 thing I would add would be a small spin dryer by the pool so that when we had a shower the costumes would be dryer quicker, ready for the next swim. Thank you Karen and Robbie for making our first family holiday in Cornwall 'one to remember'.
Fantastic facility, great location and treated very well by Karen and rob. Definitely a place we would like to book again in the future.
Trevithick Retreat was amazing, we had a fantastic stay, good central location visited Perranporth, Newquay, Hayle and st Ives, lovely to be able to come back to trevithick Retreat with a fab pool and hot-tub. Karen and Robbie were welcoming and showed us the house and how to use the facilities, also and added extra of a welcome pack with tea, coffee, milk, sugar, scones with jam and clotted cream, an Easter egg each for the kids and wine and beer. Totally fantastic stay and some days the kids didn't want to leave as so much to do. They also have the Wii so kids have entertainment in the evening. Cannot recommend the place enough...... absolutely fantastic
Superb place to stay.
Beautiful accommodation, spotlessly clean & has everything you need for a great stay.
Pool & hot tub are great, beds are very comfortable, took us a while to get motivated to get up!
Owners are lovely people, only to happy to help with anything you need & also provided little extras on our arrival which is a lovely touch. Will 100% recommend to anyone needing a break away.
We will be definitely returning on our next visit to Cornwall.
Our stay at Trevithick Retreat was absolutely perfect! First let me start by saying that our hosts were extremely kind and helpful. Upon arrival, they spent time with us, showing us the house and how to work the pool, Jacuzzi, etc. They were very “down to Earth”, super-friendly and easy to talk to.
As for the accommodation – I could not have picked a more perfect place to stay. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, and I certainly hope we get the chance to visit the area again as I would love to stay in the same house. It is a perfect retreat for any time of year! It has all of the amenities you could possibly want or need.
The house and grounds were immaculate and very well decorated. The pool and Jacuzzi were amazing and the temperature of both were just perfect. There were great pool toys available for use, which we all loved. It was also so cool to be able to have the TV on while in it. It was great to be in the pool, and still be able to watch the Olympic events on the TV, or have music on! The sound system was awesome. Playing pool and ping pong were a lot of fun too. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with everything you need to cook and entertain. The beds are super comfortable. The gardens and outside entertaining area were lovely and very well kept. The house was very private and just so comfortable and cozy!
I was also very pleasantly surprised that they had also done some shopping to provide us with a few food and drink supplies to get us started. I had not anticipated that at all as this has never happened at any other place we have rented. What an amazing touch to the rental! They really had thought of everything to make this stay wonderful for us. I am so impressed!
We have rented many places, in different countries, and this is by far my favorite place!
We absolutely loved staying here. Everything about the property was wonderful, in particular the amazing pool area and the hot tub! Having the tv or music on whilst in the pool was an added attraction! The lounge/kitchen/dining area was great for relaxing in the evening and all of the beds were incredibly comfortable. The hosts couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. An ideal location for exploring local beaches and attractions. We hope to return in the future!
Overall the house and facilities were excellent. The pool is amazing and we struggled to get the kids to come out which allowed us to really relax.
Great location for visiting, St Ives, Falmouth and Newquay.
Fab location and stunning facilities
We will be back again soon
Thanks again xxx
Beautiful house in a great location.
We were lucky with the weather but if you had a rainy day it would be no problem to stay at the house, there is plenty to keep you entertained.
Owners live next door, so any problems or advice about the area is easy to obtain.
Redruth was great base to explore this part of our lovely country, we visited lands end, lizard, st Michaels mount, Falmouth, st ives and many little villages in the area.
Would thouroughly recommend
A lovely house with an amazing swimming, and hot tub. Beautifully decorated with everything brand new. Weather wasn't so kind to us, so the warm clean pool was our saving grace. Robbie and Karen were great . Easy train ride to St Ives and 30 mins from Newquay, this is the ideal holiday home to stay at.
An incredible holiday, thanks to the outstanding property - Trevithick Retreat was a real indulgence, enjoyed by all and we can't wait to return! The pool and hot tub were such a wonderful feature and Robbie and Karen made so many lovely gestures throughout our stay (including a really thoughtful welcome pack of delicious treats!), we felt really well looked after! It's a fantastic base for exploring the best of Cornwall - without hesitation we would absolutely recommend this holiday!
Our family has just returned from a fantastic stay here, we were welcomed in and was delighted to find everything was even better than the photos.
We loved the fire by our pool, it was truly relaxing and the kids were always busy :)
AMAZING - Location is just perfect, views are stunning - Laura was very helpful and the cottage was modern, had everything we needed. Having a pool to ourselves was just unreal, felt like a celeb on holiday! We had one rainy day so we stayed in, this was one of the best days of the holiday! We are booking again for 2017
